The Ripple Effect: How Your Choices Shape Your Success

Anne Bachrach

Every day, whether you realize it or not, you’re creating ripples. Some are small, like the choice of whether to eat oatmeal or eggs for breakfast. Others are massive, like saying “yes” to enhancing your existing business to a new level, getting married, a new job, or moving across the country.

The truth is, most people underestimate how much power their choices really hold. They imagine “big decisions” are the only ones that matter. However, here’s the reality: every choice has consequences, and those consequences stack. Over time, the ripple effect of your choices can radically shape your business, your career, your relationships, and ultimately, the quality of your life.

Research from Cornell University suggests the average person makes about 35,000 decisions every single day. That’s a staggering number! No wonder we often feel overwhelmed or exhausted because our brains are constantly choosing, sorting, and deciding. And here’s the kicker: each of those choices creates momentum in a particular direction. The question is, are your ripple effect choices moving you closer to your ideal business and life, or further away from them?

The Ripple Effect: How Your Choices Shape Your Success

Decision Fatigue Is Real

Have you ever stared at your closet in the morning, completely unable to decide what to wear? Or stood in front of the fridge and felt paralyzed by the options? That is decision fatigue.

When your brain is flooded with too many small decisions, it drains your mental energy and makes it harder to focus on the choices that really matter. That’s why many high performers, from CEOs to athletes, simplify their mornings for example. Some eat the same breakfast every day. Others lay out clothes the night before. These small strategies aren’t about being boring; they’re about conserving brainpower for the decisions that move the needle forward.

Here’s a simple rule: start your day decision-free.

·         Plan your meals in advance.

·         Choose your outfit before bed.

·         If you have kids, decide on their breakfast the night before.

These small acts save precious mental energy. By the time you hit your desk in the morning, you’ll have the focus to tackle what really counts, so you can take your business to the next level.

“Decision fatigue is real. Save your mental energy for the choices that move the needle.”

Plan Your Day Before It Starts

Too many entrepreneurs and professionals begin their day staring at a blank calendar, wondering what to do first. That’s a recipe for procrastination. Instead, make tomorrow’s plan today.

Before you log off your computer at the end of the day:

·         Open your calendar for the next day.

·         Block time for your most important high payoff activities.

·         Carry over anything unfinished from today and prioritize your list.

·         Note appointments, calls, and deadlines.

When you wake up, you’re not thinking “what should I do?”, you’re simply executing the plan you have already set. This one habit alone can skyrocket productivity and reduce stress. (If you need help with time blocking your calendar for maximum efficiency, check out my article here: https://bit.ly/Time_Blocking).

The Ripple Effect of Big Decisions

Now let’s talk about the choices that create tidal waves. Think back on your life:

·         Enhancing your business.

·         Hiring employees.

·         Getting married, having kids, or moving across the country.

·         Saying yes to a new big client.

·         Choosing a career or making a career change.

·         Even choosing to adopt a pet.

Each of these creates ripples that reach far beyond the initial moment.

Maybe you chased a big idea to enhance your business to a new level. The ripple was 60-hour work weeks, strained family time, and more stress than satisfaction. While the risk was terrifying, the ripple was freedom, control, and a sense of purpose you’d been missing.

It’s easy to look back and say, “If only I knew then what I know now.” Here’s the truth: those ripples, even the hard ones, are part of what shaped the life you have today. And they’re what positions you for the future you want.

A Practical Exercise: Map Your Ripple Effects

Grab a notebook (or a blank word document) and list 5–10 of the biggest decisions you’ve made in your life. Next to each one, note whether the ripple turned out to be:

·         Positive (moved you forward)

·         Negative (held you back)

·         Neutral (no major impact either way)

Then ask yourself: Would I make the same decision again?

This exercise gives you perspective. You’ll see the patterns of choices that led to your greatest wins, and the ones that drained your energy. Awareness is the first step to making better choices today.

Facing a Big Decision Right Now?

Maybe you’re in the middle of a crossroads today. Should you hire that new team member? Invest in that new system? Accept the partnership opportunity? Or maybe it’s more personal, should you move, downsize, or change your lifestyle?

Here’s the key: Indecision is also a decision. As the band Rush sang, “If you choose not to decide, you still have made a choice.” And often, inaction carries just as many ripple effects as action and sometimes worse.

To move forward, use this framework:

1.      Write down the decision.

2.      List your options.

3.      Write the pros and cons for each option.

4.      Imagine the best-case scenario if you move forward.

5.      Imagine the worst-case scenario if you move forward.

This simple process creates clarity. And if you want a tool to help you, download my complimentary Pros vs. Cons Exercise here: https://bit.ly/Pros-Cons-Exercise.

Don’t Let Indecision Drain You

Indecision is one of the biggest energy drains in business and in life. It keeps you stuck, stressed, and second-guessing. When you commit, weigh your options deliberately, and make a choice, you take back control.

And remember: no decision is final. If a choice creates ripples you don’t like, you can always course correct when necessary. What matters most is building the muscle of decisive action.

The Bottom Line

Your choices matter more than you think. Small choices shape your day. Big choices shape your destiny. Together, they create the ripple effect that determines your future.

The question is: are you making choices that create positive ripples, or negative ones?

Don’t leave your success to chance. Take ownership of your decisions, simplify where you can, and move forward with confidence.

Your life is a series of ripples. Start creating the ones that carry you toward your ideal business and ideal life.
