7 Ways to Track Your Progress Towards Your Goals

Anne Bachrach

Progress tracking is a crucial aspect of growth for any business. To ensure steady and consistent growth, you need to set important goals that take your business activities into consideration.

Business professionals and entrepreneurs are typically hardwired to cross the finish line. To make this journey a successful one, goals are broken into long-term and short-term.

After these goals are broken down, it is important to further crunch them into bite-sized milestones and tasks for easy completion and assessment. To break things down further also drives your need to cross things off a, sometimes too long, to-do list after successful completion.

By tracking your progress, you ensure that all your business activities and decisions are setting you on the right path to your success.

Having key performance indicators (KPIs) / business metrics will help you.

Let’s explore 7 ways to track your progress towards your goals.

Keeping your eyes on the main goal ensures that you can track your progress more effectively and efficiently, and you will have a much higher probability you will achieve your goals in the time frame you desire.

7 Ways to Track Your Progress Towards Your Goals

The challenge with tracking your progress towards your goal is that many entrepreneurs have different ways of progress tracking. What some professionals prefer may be rejected by others.

Having key performance indicators (KPIs) / business metrics will help you:

•      Set very specific goals (for your business and for you personally)

•      Quickly help you Determine whether (or not) you’re on track to reach your goals (the firms and for you personally)

•      Evaluate the success of your strategy based on these key metrics

•      Pinpoint areas in your business that may need improvement

•      Identify any opportunities and challenges

•      Offer incentives to team members

•      And they can even Assess whether your clients are happy or not

Some key benefits of tracking certain key performance metrics are:

  • Clarification – KPIs help to clarify the current business position and performance expectations
  • Benchmarking – KPIs provide a point of reference for making future or past comparisons
  • Focus – KPIs outline the important aspects for attention within your business
  • Consistency – KPIs enable a consistent approach to achieving business goals
  • Motivation – KPIs engage employees with your company goals
  • Accountability – KPIs will highlight both good performance and under performance
  • Elimination of waste – KPIs help identify inefficiencies within your business

Let’s explore 7 ways to track your progress towards your goals.

1. Break Down Your Big Goals into Smaller Tasks

Big goals are daunting for most people. They represent a big challenge that can overwhelm you and your employees. They also present a challenge when you try to work towards achieving them.

When setting your goals, take some extra time in the planning stage. Set your long-term or big goals and familiarize yourself with them. After doing this, break them into short-term goals that lead you on the path to achieving the long-term goals.

After breaking these goals down, break them down further into smaller tasks and milestones and assign each task to a person or team. By doing this, your employees can understand what they need to do, what decisions need to be made, and what activities need to be carried out before the completion date.

2. Monitor Your Progress Daily

Every day, lay out the tasks and activities that need to be undertaken and completed by your team. At the end of every day, review the progress made and take important notes of them.

When tracking your progress, monitoring your daily tasks tells you how possible it is for you to achieve your tasks and goals. Daily progress monitoring helps you rate the activities of each employee and creates daily accountability towards the end goal.

3. Track Your Weekly Goals

The week is made up of many days, countless hours, tasks, and responsibilities. When you work without any measurement, time passes swiftly, and your goal timeline can quickly creep up on you.

After daily progress monitoring and tracking, your weekly goals should be tracked too. At the beginning of every week, outline the goals for the week and the activities that need to be undertaken to ensure their completion.

At the end of the week, track these goals, their completion rate, challenges, and any other important updates that may affect the output.

4. Reward Systems

Incentives make goal setting a fun and rewarding process. Your business gets what it deserves, and your employees don’t feel left out. Rewards encourage you to put in 150% when working towards a task or goal. It also significantly affects how employees relate to business activities.

Rewards create a safe and competitive environment, improved productivity, focus, and creativity, along with critical thinking to complex problems. Create a reward system at the end of some key tasks or goals to encourage and celebrate the successful completion of the hectic process.

Many companies have a social gathering where employees can relax and unwind after the week’s exertions.

5. Switch It Up Often

Predictability can lead to laziness and negligence. Monotony in the workplace can lead to a lack of creativity, interest, and activity.  To track your progress, switch up your activities often to keep your team on their toes.

Impromptu meetings, review sessions, activity updates, and business activities will help keep your employees alert and on track every time. Remove predictability in your business by switching up your activities and moving the goalposts further.

This improves your competitive spirit and makes every reward taste better.

6. Plan Your Time

Time is the most limited resource available. No matter what you do, time will always go by with the pressures of many goals pressing on your shoulders. To track your progress effectively, it is important to learn effective time management skills.

Effective time management leads to improved productivity in business for everyone. Take a step back and plan your weekly goals and daily activities. After doing this, prioritize your tasks on their level of importance, and put the appropriate time blocks in your calendar to give yourself the highest probability you will get them done.

By planning your time, you are allocating every valuable waking minute towards a task. When you have a schedule that is followed through, you make better decisions, complete more tasks, and improve your overall productivity.

7. Focus on the Main Goal

Though breaking your goals into smaller tasks and activities helps you track your progress better, it can cause you to lose focus on the bigger goal.  You always want to know where you are at against the big goals to verify you are on track, or not.

Ensure that you set your mind on the result even when your eyes are on the smaller tasks. By doing this, you can always align your activities on the paths to achieve your main goal.

Keeping your eyes on the main goal ensures that you can track your progress more effectively and efficiently, and you will have a much higher probability you will achieve your goals in the time frame you desire.
